Adolescent and Teen Mental Health Services in Las Vegas, NV
When we provide treatment for mental illness in adolescent and teens, we include the following features in our programs:
- DBT/Play therapy approach: Patients are empowered to learn more about emotional regulation and taught to use mindfulness techniques to make better choices and gain a sense of control.
- Simplified unit expectations: We expect three things from our patients – respect for oneself, respect for others, and respect for the environment. Simplifying unit expectations reduce the punitive nature of consequences associated with “rules.” Additionally, re-direction toward specific behaviors initiates teaching moments for patients and assists them in making better choices for their needs and wants.
- Family focus: Families are encouraged to actively participate in treatment planning throughout the patient’s hospitalization – families receive education and support in assisting the patient through his or her treatment. Active involvement throughout the program will help loved ones learn positive ways to assist the patient in working through his or her issues and facilitate the family’s experience with the patient’s transition home (while developing a support group aided by social workers).
- Rotating group topics: Group therapy sessions include a variety of discussion topics relevant to the challenges associated with mental illness in adolescent and teens.
- One-on-one sessions: Each adolescent and teen has the opportunity to partake in individual therapy sessions, as needed, to work through personal issues and get tailored coping advice.
- Group psychotherapy: Patients participate in regular group therapy to allow them to share their emotions and struggles with other teens and adolescent who can relate or have dealt with similar challenges.
- “Comfort Cart”: Teens and adolescent are provided with resources and techniques to trigger a self-calming response, which allows them to consciously take control over their thoughts and behaviors.
Discharge Planning
Discharge planning is an integral part of ongoing treatment and begins shortly after admission to our adolescent’s or teen mental health programs. Desert Parkway’s multidisciplinary team is involved in establishing an individualized plan that is reflective of the patient’s needs and goals and determines an appropriate length of stay. Aftercare plans may include:
- Family and/or individual therapy
- Medication monitoring
- Self-help and support groups
- Intensive outpatient programs
- Partial hospital program
- Assistance with safe housing
