Each year mental health conditions affect millions of Americans. While each condition’s causes and symptoms are often a topic of discussion, sometimes discussions on the mental health recovery process take the back seat. Recovery from mental health conditions can be challenging, but recovery is possible. With treatment, people can get back in control of their life and well-being.
During National Recovery Month this September, mental health advocacy groups, healthcare organizations, and individuals come together with the message that treatment can be effective and people can recover. Treatment for mental health has advanced significantly, and clinical professionals can now treat mental health conditions with a variety of specialized care programs. By raising awareness of mental health treatment and the possibility of recovery during National Recovery Month, people can encourage others to get the treatment they need.
In this article, we share how to get involved in National Recovery Month this September. There are a variety of events that one can get involved with, and people can also get involved virtually via social media campaigns. We also discuss available treatment programs and how a person can get started on their recovery journey.
Ways to participate in National Recovery Month
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers have canceled many in-person events and gatherings for National Recovery Month. However, there are still ways to participate responsibly while respecting social distancing guidelines. During the current pandemic, many people struggling with mental health may need support more than ever as they deal with increased isolation and uncertainty in their lives.
One way to get involved is by learning more about mental health treatment and recovery yourself. With the month’s Webinar Wednesdays from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, you can attend online or via phone and learn about current efforts and research to improve mental health recovery. By educating yourself, you can be better prepared to discuss mental health issues with friends and family when they need support.
A second way to participate is by joining Thriving United’s online scavenger hunt for National Recovery Month. The scavenger hunt is a fun way to get your friends and family involved in the month in a lighthearted way. During the scavenger hunt, teams will gain points by making online posts, taking pictures, and creating videos supporting National Recovery Month. At the end, the team with the most points will take part in a grand prize ceremony on October 3rd.
Getting involved by sharing mental health recovery stories
Another way to participate in National Recovery Month is by sharing stories of people’s successful recoveries. Sometimes it is difficult for people to imagine their recovery or think they can achieve it. Reading the stories of everyday people and having a face to go with each story can help make the possibility of recovery seem more real. To share stories of successful recoveries, visit the Faces & Voices of Recovery organization’s “recovery stories” blog “recovery stories” blog. On the blog, you will find dozens of stories of how people overcame their mental health challenges after receiving treatment.
You can also participate in National Recovery Month by sharing your own recovery story with the Faces & Voices of Recovery organization. Complete the submission form, and after a review, the organization will feature your story on their blog. Each recovery journey is unique, and by sharing your story, you can provide hope and support for others who are in a similar situation. You can also share your story personally with friends and family and with mental health support groups. When a person struggling with mental health meets an individual who has recovered, the experience can motivate the person to seek treatment themselves.
